Large Engineering Project Awarded to Emerson Process Management

Emerson Process Management was recently awarded a contract to supply engineering and project management on a $20 million project that delivers high pressure steam and deionized water to a Solutia plant. This project ties into a co-generation facility that is being built and that will replace an aging boiler system at the plant.

Solutia chose Emerson Process Management for its ability to provide an engineering solution and construction bid packages within 10-12 weeks. The timing is critical. Solutia is obligated to comply with the terms of a contract it has in place with the co-generation facility presently under construction.

Terry Swanson, Senior Fellow with Solutia, says that “Emerson Process Management promised, and delivered, a quick start on this project. They are meeting their milestones and doing a great job managing a project team that includes both Emerson Process Management engineers as well as Solutia engineers. I am very happy with their work.”

The project scope includes structural engineering, piping design, project management, and electrical and controls engineering work. A major portion of the phase I scope is design of a 2,000 foot structural bridge to carry a total of 10,000 feet of new pipeline. The bridge is 25 feet wide by 25 feet high and will tie into an existing bridge at the plant.

Piping design by Emerson Process Management will include an 18 inch pipeline carrying river water to the cogen facility, and a 30 inch pipeline carrying high pressure steam back to the plant, as well as various other process pipelines and cable tray. 3-D software is being used in the design. Emerson Process Management engineers are also conducting stress analyses on the high pressure steam pipeline. This 30 inch diameter pipeline has a 1 inch wall thickness and 5 inches of insulation. The 2,000 foot line is expected to grow up to 10 feet when heated to 750 degrees Fahrenheit.

Emerson Financial Services is providing project financing.
