| NOVA Chemicals Corporation (NCX) operates
the largest ethylene/polyethylene chemical complex in the world. As part of their
"J2000" suite of projects, NOVA added three new plants to the Joffre,
Alberta, Canada, site: - A third ethylene plant with a 2.8 billion
pound per year capacity
- A second polyethylene plant with a 850 million
pound capacity
- A new 450 megawatt gas-fired co-generation plant
All
of these world class, large-scale facilities were coming online in a very short
period of time, so NOVA turned to Emerson Process Management for commissioning
assistance. With our help, commissioning the three new plants took just over 18
months with 144,000 person hours logged. The work performed included verification,
documentation, startup, and building of 30,000 I/O points, three new DCS systems,
numerous PLC systems, and various subsystems. This commissioning and startup
effort required the expertise of over 100 field and office personnel, so keeping
a step ahead of the resource requirements was an ongoing challenge. The commissioning
schedules of the three facilities occasionally overlapped and startup support
coverage was required 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The professionalism,
dependability, and flexibility of Emerson Process Management's field personnel
throughout the project were exceptional. Through successful partnerships with
suppliers such as Emerson Process Management, NOVA has created the world's largest
and lowest cost olefins complex at Joffre. Emerson Process Management is proud
to help NOVA achieve their vision to be "the best commodity chemicals company
in the world." |
