Project Management Capabilities
“Scalable services and products delivered globally with a local
presence.”
Emerson has extensive experience working with and complementing the services
of EPC lump sum contractors. We work as either a subcontractor or under one
of our flexible commercial and contracting strategies, most notably our Main
Automation Contractor (MAC) Program.
Over many projects, our MAC program has shown to provide lower project
risk, lower project costs and timing, quicker time to profitability,
increased profit, and superior plant manageability after project startup
over traditional project approaches.
In a MAC relationship, Emerson strives for a high level of partnership
within the project team including the client and general EPC.
- Responsibility matrices help the project teams define a clear
responsibilities matrix
- Early involvement reduces rework later in the project
-
Change orders are minimized throughout the project by ensuring key
decisions are made early in the project related to tradeoffs in technology,
purchase cost, installed costs, and total life cycle costs.

As technology
continues to evolve and improve more rapidly, leveraging the
strengths of a company whose core business competency is automation
ensures that these early decisions are made with the latest possible
options in mind.
Additionally, involvement as part of the MAC can allow us to prepare
personnel to optimize commissioning time and costs leveraging tools
developed by Emerson. This is especially true when trying to get the
full installed cost advantages of Plantweb® digital technology.Emerson
Main Automation Contractor (MAC) Program
The MAC approach involves earlier involvement by the
automation contractor in the project, which allows for greater
influence over the costs and benefits of a project. This effect has
been validated by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) in a
1998 report, “Reforming Owner, Contractor, Supplier Relationships:
A Project Delivery System to Optimize Supplier Roles in EPC
Projects”.
The CII report states that:
Using a sophisticated simulation model of the classic EPC process,
the research team compared the impact of the PEpC approach to the
project execution with traditional EPC. In both theoretical and
field implementations, the results indicated that PEpC could produce
savings in excess of 10% to 15% of the time and 4% to 8% percent of
the cost of the traditional EPC process.

Emerson’s MAC project savings and benefits are threefold:

The combination of Emerson’s implementation expertise and
PlantWeb digital technology creates a compelling advantage for our
clients. We help reduce capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating
expenditure (OPEX) spends by reducing project costs, bringing the
system online faster, and providing the mechanism and services to
optimize performance and maintain high reliability of the asset.

Emerson’s MAC approach cost savings are summarized below:
- Early involvement leads to accurate estimates and cost
control.
- Equipment selection, which is made later in the process,
minimizes risks and costs of change orders.
- Seamless integration of all control packages is ensured by the
- The lump sum turnkey (LSTK) portion of the contract relieves
the customer of cost control concerns.
- Contract definition provides defined add/delete pricing for
goods and services.
- Benefits begin with the capital investment on the first
project and are transferable to other projects.
- Emerson global capability to provide local resourcing and
support infrastructure delivers additional benefits in
operations and maintenance.
A MAC approach is not just about what tasks the automation vendor
can perform; it is also about building relationships with our
customers and working in a mutual manner. The MAC approach requires
that the vendor fully understand not only the technical requirements
of the projects but also the customer’s business and process
operating objectives. This trust relationship is imperative to the
successful execution of MAC projects.
Emerson has been successful in building these types of relationships
in the past. Our knowledge of our customers’ industries, combined
with our technology expertise, help us to better understand what
areas can cause the largest issues. Our project personnel have
experience dealing with many different cultures, values, and
business processes from prior projects with many different
customers. This extends to service and support.
